Choosing the Right Level of Care — Counseling, Coaching, and Insurance | Icebergology™

Choosing the Right Level of Care

Counseling, Coaching, and Insurance

One of the most common questions I receive is, "Will my insurance cover these services?"

The answer depends primarily on the type of service you receive, your insurance benefits, and whether the services meet your insurer's requirements for medical necessity.

At Icebergology™, I offer two distinct professional services:

  • Licensed Professional Counseling
  • Christ-centered Coaching and Personal Formation

Although these services often address similar life struggles, they serve different purposes and are governed by different professional standards. My goal is to help you receive the level of care that best fits your needs—not simply the level of care that may be reimbursed.

Licensed Professional Counseling

Professional counseling is a clinical service that I provide under my Mississippi license as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Counseling is intended to assess and treat diagnosable mental health conditions when clinically appropriate. Services are individualized based on each client's needs and are documented in accordance with accepted professional standards.

Because counseling is considered healthcare, some insurance plans may reimburse a portion of the cost when:

  • A diagnosable mental health condition is present.
  • Treatment is medically necessary.
  • Your insurance plan includes applicable out-of-network mental health benefits.
  • Your insurance company approves reimbursement.

I do not participate directly with insurance companies or submit claims on your behalf. When appropriate, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance carrier for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Please understand that any reimbursement decision is made solely by your insurance company. Coverage can never be guaranteed.

Deciding Whether to Seek Insurance Reimbursement

For some clients, using insurance is the right decision. For others, paying privately is a better fit. There is no universally correct choice.

When you seek insurance reimbursement for counseling services, a mental health diagnosis, treatment plan, billing codes, and other clinical information necessary to process your claim become part of your medical insurance record. This information is shared only as permitted by law and only to the extent necessary for payment and healthcare operations.

Many clients have no concerns about this process. Others prefer greater privacy and choose to pay for services themselves rather than involve their insurance company.

Some clients also consider the potential long-term implications of creating an insurance record of mental health treatment. While a counseling diagnosis does not affect your credit score and generally does not increase premiums for employer-sponsored or Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans, mental health history may be considered when applying for certain individually underwritten products, such as life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance. The impact, if any, depends on many factors, including the diagnosis, severity, treatment history, and the underwriting standards of the insurance company.

Because every person's circumstances are unique, I encourage clients to consider both the financial benefits of possible reimbursement and their own preferences regarding privacy before deciding whether to submit counseling services to their insurance carrier.

Marriage and Family Counseling

Many people are surprised to learn that health insurance generally does not pay simply to improve a marriage or strengthen family relationships.

Health insurance is designed to reimburse treatment for an individual's diagnosed mental health condition—not the relationship itself.

In some circumstances, spouses or family members may participate in treatment when it supports the care of the identified patient. However, services whose primary purpose is marriage enrichment, relationship restoration, parenting, family functioning, or relationship growth are generally not reimbursed by insurance.

Clinical Care Intensives

My Clinical Care Intensives provide an extended counseling format for individuals who may benefit from concentrated clinical care under my Mississippi counseling license.

Although these intensives involve many hours of professional counseling, insurance reimbursement for private-practice intensive services is uncommon. Most insurance companies reserve Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) benefits for programs that meet specific facility, staffing, accreditation, and program requirements, which are often associated with hospitals or licensed behavioral health programs.

Clients should not expect insurance to reimburse the cost of a Clinical Care Intensive as though it were a hospital-based or licensed behavioral health IOP.

When reimbursement is available, it is typically based on covered counseling services, not the intensive format itself.

Christ-Centered Coaching and Personal Formation

Many people seek help not because they have a mental health disorder, but because they desire growth.

Icebergology™ Coaching is designed to help individuals deepen their relationship with Christ, strengthen emotional and relational maturity, understand the deeper patterns beneath recurring struggles, and pursue lasting transformation in every area of life.

Coaching is educational, developmental, and formational in nature. It is not psychotherapy and does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders.

Because coaching is not considered medical treatment, it is not reimbursable through health insurance.

Counseling or Coaching?

During your Discovery Call, we will determine together which pathway best fits your goals and needs.

Counseling may be appropriate when:

  • A mental health condition is present or suspected.
  • Clinical assessment is appropriate.
  • Treatment requires the services of a licensed mental health professional.
  • Diagnosis, treatment planning, or psychotherapy is indicated.

Coaching may be appropriate when:

  • You desire personal or spiritual growth.
  • You are seeking greater emotional, relational, or leadership maturity.
  • You want to understand and change the deeper patterns beneath recurring behaviors.
  • You desire biblical wisdom and practical application through the Icebergology™ model.
  • Clinical mental health treatment is not your primary need.

Some clients begin with counseling and later transition into coaching. Others begin with coaching and are referred for clinical services if concerns arise that would be better addressed through licensed mental health care.

My commitment is not to fit you into a particular program but to recommend the level of care that best serves your needs.

Licensure and Practice Location

I am licensed as a Professional Counselor in the State of Mississippi.

Clinical counseling services are provided in accordance with Mississippi law and applicable professional regulations. Clients receiving counseling services must be physically located in Mississippi at the time services are provided.

Because I reside in Florida, I travel to Mississippi to conduct Clinical Care Intensives and other counseling services during a limited number of scheduled clinical weeks throughout the year. Clients seeking counseling services should expect to coordinate with these scheduled dates. This arrangement allows me to continue offering licensed counseling while also serving coaching clients throughout the country.

My coaching practice is separate from my licensed counseling practice. Coaching services are available to clients in many locations because they do not constitute the practice of licensed professional counseling, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

Which Service Is Right for You?

If you are uncertain whether counseling or coaching best fits your circumstances, a Discovery Call is the ideal place to begin.

Together we will discuss your goals, answer your questions, and determine the level of care that is most appropriate for your situation. If counseling is indicated, I will explain what that process looks like. If coaching is the better fit, we will discuss the options available through the Icebergology™ model.

Whether you ultimately pursue counseling, coaching, another provider, or another level of care entirely, my commitment remains the same: to recommend what I believe is in your best interest. That commitment comes before convenience, reimbursement, or any particular service I offer.
